Sat., July 20, the GrandMothers of Invention
Assembly, 9 p.m., $25
Several surviving members of Frank Zappa's band, the Mothers of Invention, are midway through the One Size Fits All tour under the moniker the GrandMothers of Invention. They can still rock the house just as hard as in their younger days. If you need to Sheik Yerbouti this week but can't afford a “Holiday in Berlin,” trek over to Assembly. Expect frontman and saxophonist Napoleon Murphy Brock to lead the charge with vintage Zappa classics like “Inca Roads” and “Village of the Sun.” Unlike most ubiquitous mercenary reunion tours by over-the-hill rockers of yore, the GrandMothers are as ambitious and well-rehearsed as ever. 1000 K Street, www.grandmothersofinvention.com.
