Does a girl band have to be either nauseatingly dreamy, such as Au Revoir Simone, or unabashedly leather rock, like locals Aroarah? No—and thank goodness. The trio of women who makes up San Francisco’s Grass Widow lace together a catchy brand of indie rock, but it’s kinda glum, even mod and dark. Sure, there are hints of that trademark Vivian Girls all-lady band post-punk, but Grass Widow brings a harder, more rousing, drum-forward vibe that’s brisk, fun, tough.
