Sat, Aug 14, Leslie Stevens & the Badgers
Sophia’s Thai Kitchen, 9:30 p.m., $5
You’d expect Leslie Stevens & the Badgers to come out of Nashville, Tenn., or at least a little country town in Texas, not Los Angeles. Surprisingly, frontwoman Stevens moved to L.A. by way of Chicago and St. Louis. She also got her start in church choirs, followed by a stint in the L.A. punk scene and then as a composer for cult filmmaker Owen Land. However, her indie-folk music has depth that seems a part of her past. Stevens herself possesses a Dolly Parton-like voice, but a little more mousy. Yet, she has the ability to morph her voice into a sultry-meets-melancholy country style with ease. 129 E Street in Davis; www.myspace.com/
