Sacramento History Online

www.sacramentohistory.org

This collaboration between several local libraries and museums, including the Sacramento Public Library, offers online access to images and documents from Sacramento’s past. The groups involved hope eventually to digitize and catalog up to 2,000 of the items in their collections. Though the site’s a bit heavy on transportation and agriculture images and documents—as you’d expect in Sacramento—it also has plenty of public notices, including one for a slave auction on J Street. The search function works very well, allowing users to look for images based on keywords or time periods. Also included are a pair of interactive games to introduce the younger set to the Big Tomato’s history. The images of the great flood of 1862 are most impressive, as are the views of the old riverfront.
