Richard Buckner

Meadow

Buckner’s latest album cultivates the same Americana-infused flavor as his earlier releases, no doubt due in part to his reunion with J.D. Foster, who also produced Devotion + Doubt, Since and Impasse. Buckner once again employs his unmistakable voice—a steady-paced, melancholy-soaked drawl—and ambiguous poetics, which may prove off-putting to those not familiar with the Marysville-area native. While there’s no doubt that the lyrics are meaningful for the artist, listeners are left to decipher that meaning on their own. Non-sequitur images aside, one can’t help but picture Buckner driving on the back roads of Northern California, mile markers passing by as the sun dips below the horizon and sets the fields ablaze.
