Rat Race

Eight guests at a Vegas casino are selected for a cross-country race to find a $2 million jackpot. Meanwhile, the casino owner (John Cleese, in grotesque dentures) follows their progress, charting odds among a group of high-rollers. Director Jerry Zucker and Writer Andy Breckman rehash everything from It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World to The Cannonball Run, smearing it all with a thick layer of Farrelly brothers gross-outs. A game cast (Whoopi Goldberg, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jon Lovitz, Kathy Najimy,Breckin Meyer, Seth Green) huffs and puffs and sweats and strains, but all to absolutely no effect; nobody could squeeze a laugh out of this ungainly melange. There is, however, one tiny chuckle: the amusing sight of Dean Cain (Superman of TV’s Lois and Clark) as a tourist in Lucy Ricardo drag.
