Raising the bar

A poem originally published in SN&R will be included in The Best American Poetry 2007, this year’s edition of the annual poetry collection.

“The Home of the Brave” by UC Davis professor Joe Wenderoth, was chosen by guest editor Heather McHugh as one of the 75 best poems of the year.

“The Home of the Brave” was published in SN&R’s first War Issue (”Fighting words,” SN&R Arts&Culture, March 16, 2006), which commemorated the third anniversary of the U.S. war with Iraq.

“These poems are culled each year from magazines, Web sites, and literary journals large and small, old and new, from all over the country,” Bibbins told SN&R. The series, now in its twentieth year, has a different guest editor for each volume. This is the first poem by Wenderoth—and the first poem from SN&R—to be included in the series.

According to Mark Bibbins, assistant to the series editor David Lehman, the collection will be published by Scribner in September.
