Puppy love
We’re a cat family, but I am certainly not anti-dog, so I’m not at all put off by the canine theme at Butch-N-Nellie’s Coffee Co. Indeed, it makes it that much more fun as a hangout, though it’s already pretty jolly, with board games, elaborate Lego constructions on show and plenty of cushy seating. Plus, the main event—the coffee—is darned good. My cappuccino had a pretty, streaky pattern etched in the foam; the barista told me proudly, “This is actually better than the perfect way it’s supposed to be.” I’m not sure what that means, but I enjoyed it along with a shortbread sandwich cookie (desserts come from Carina’s Creations). They offer panini, other sandwiches and soups as well. Butch-N-Nellie’s is a block or so off the beaten track, but if you’re out walking the dog—or just yourself—it’s an ideal stop. 1827 I Street, (916) 443-6133.
