Call for Unity Week

WHEREAS, on September 11, 2001, the United States suffered the worst terrorist attacks in its history at the hands of religious zealots; and

WHEREAS, members of the greater Sacramento community also suffered bigoted attacks based on their different religious faiths, nationalities and ethnicities before and after September 11; and

WHEREAS, the community has answered the call for unity on the anniversary of these attacks, coming together to celebrate interfaith unity and cooperation; and

WHEREAS, communication and understanding are the foundation on which citizens are building unity and a community of respect;

WHEREAS, Elder Richard Montgomery of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints will be honored for Outstanding Contributions to Interfaith Understanding and Cooperation on September 11th at the Third Annual Call for Unity at the Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the following Cities and the County of Sacramento do hereby proclaim September 6 – 12th, 2004 as “Call for Unity Week” and does hereby urge all members of the community to participate in local and regional celebratory, educational and service activities embracing our diversity, promoting understanding and building unity between all faiths and races.
