Continuing our commitment to young musicians, SN&R, in conjunction with the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, the Sacramento Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Sacramento Arts & Business Council, is proud to present the third-annual JAMMIES, a two-night benefit concert showcasing the Sacramento area’s best high-school musicians and raising funds for music education programs in area high schools.

The JAMMIES program celebrates both individual and group performances in a wide assortment of musical genres. The March 5th Night of Contemporary Music at the Crest Theatre highlights the area’s best rock, punk, pop, heavy metal, folk, and funk music. The March 20th Evening of Classical Music features classical and traditional music that includes symphonic, musical theater, jazz and gospel choral, and solo performances. Half of the proceeds of tickets sales go directly back to the high school music education programs responsible for the performances at the JAMMIES Classical Evening. Performers at the JAMMIES Contemporary Night will receive donated music goods and services, with one act receiving recording time in a local studio.

Additionally, in recognition of the enormous contribution made by our music educators, we are also presenting the third annual Award for Outstanding Contributions to High School Music Education. Sacramento Youth Symphony Artistic Director Michael Neumann is being honored at the March 20th concert with a VIP reception and the presentation of this award (see the story). Maestro Neumann’s career is a testament to the essential role played by music educators, who guide and inspire young musicians as they discover their calling.

By providing a stage and a spotlight to recognize the considerable gifts and accomplishments of these young musicians, we hope to provide the critical support these musicians need, while raising awareness of the funding crises faced by the music education programs upon which these students rely.
