So it’s a little old. Some people call that “nostalgia” and charge extra for it. Besides, there are enough jokes about technology in this stage version of 9 to 5 to create a little meta-joke about how much has changed since the film 9 to 5 was a hit in 1980—starting with how all those pink-collar jobs would have been downsized into nonexistence years ago. Put that aside, and listen to the gorgeous voices of Dee Hoty (Violet), Diana DeGarmo (Doralee) and Mamie Parris (Judy Bernly) as they sing Dolly Parton’s words and music. Heck, DeGarmo practically channels Dolly. High energy makes it easy to overlook the predictability—even the dialogue is the same as the movie, in spots—and the rather campy edge that never quite cuts loose as it should. But geez, those songs—and those voices—take 9 to 5 out of the ordinary working week.
