Popsicle mystery
Los Jarritos Mexican Food
2509 BroadwaySacramento, CA 95818
Have you ever wondered what mysterious operation goes on in the back glassed-in area of Los Jarritos (2509 Broadway)? Turns out they are making paletas, or Mexican popsicles: 34 flavors, a bargain buck apiece. There are the standard fruit flavors—pineapple, cantaloupe, watermelon—but what they do best is the more unusual stuff: egg nog (tastes like a Werther’s Original), tamarind (tart, and only four all-natural ingredients) and walnut (pleasant Fudgsicle texture, rich coffee flavor). The most luscious and delicious paleta of all, though, is the vanilla and rice: whole rice grains embedded within, just like a cup of horchata in popsicle form. The only remaining Los Jarritos mystery: Who ever pays a quarter for their second serving of chips?
