Point Blank
Not to be confused with the great same-named Lee Marvin vehicle of 1967, filmmaker Fred Cavayé’s latest is fresh from the well-oiled assembly line of easily exportable French thrillers. An affable nurse’s aide (Gilles Lellouche), very much in love with his glowing pregnant wife (Elena Anaya), saves a patient’s life and finds himself entangled in a deadly conspiracy. Then the wife gets kidnapped, the patient (Roschdy Zem) gets violent, and the good cops and bad cops get very hard to tell apart. Cavayé has a way with plotty, chase-scene-intensive pulp, and also with casting: His two leading men, especially, are so fun to watch that the general mediocrity doesn’t much matter. In the end it’s all easily forgotten, which should be reason enough for a tepid American remake in a year or two.
