Paul Lewis

Beethoven # 2

As with all wonders of art, there’s more than one approach to Beethoven’s sonatas. Historically, the older era of Schnabel, with its high romanticism, gave way to the cooler precision of Brendel, (to name but two). This new release from Paul Lewis miraculously combines both. For example, Lewis’ take on Beethoven’s amazing “Pathetique” sonata. The opening grave chords are allowed to stretch almost to the breaking point, yet the overall movement grows beautifully. Succeeding movements balance the shifting moods of whimsy and grandeur. The three-CD set (volume two) features the immortal “Waldstein” and “Hammerklavier” and nine other lyrical, boisterous, pensive sonatas. Lewis is compelling, rational and gifted. If you want emotional yet intelligent Beethoven, this is it. Get volume one, as well.
