Outside the box
You could call it theater, or you could call it dance. But perhaps it’s best to call it Goode—as in Joe Goode, who artfully transcends the question of categories by naming his San Francisco-based ensemble the Joe Goode Performance Group. Goode describes his style as “smart theater,” drawing on stylized movement, exaggerated vocals, music and dramatic, plot-driven situations. Although the content is entirely modern and distinctly American, the toolkit of stagecraft that Goode employs draws on some of the same techniques used in kabuki. But there’s an edgy spontaneity and subversive humor to Goode’s work as well. He’s an artist who thinks outside the box. 8 p.m. Saturday, March 31, in the Main Theatre at UC Davis. $25 general, $12.50 students and children. (530) 752-1915. Sponsored by UC Davis Presents.
