Out of Time

Devil in a Blue Dress star Denzel Washington and director Carl Franklin re-team for a white-knuckle crime story crackling with Hitchcockian tension, and vibrant colors and music. Washington is excellent as the chief of police in a tiny Florida Keys town who has a huge cache of seized drug money secured in the station’s evidence locker. He gives the money to his married girlfriend (Sanaa Lathan) when he discovers that she has terminal cancer. Her house burns down that same night, and two charred bodies are found inside. Our squirming lawman must then solve the double homicide while his estranged homicide-detective wife (Eva Mendes) slowly begins to tie him to the crime scene, and DEA agents arrive to check the serial numbers of the money in hopes of tying it to another sting operation.
