Occupy U.N. climate summit
The United Nation’s annual climate summit, called the 17th Conference of Parties to the Convention on Climate Crisis, began last week in Durban, South Africa. Environmental protesters, calling themselves Occupy COP17, want a more binding and better-enforced environmental treaty to slow down climate change and lower greenhouse-gas emissions. In November, Costa Rica’s president Jose Maria Figueres showed public solidarity with the movement, calling upon people from countries vulnerable to rapid climate change to occupy Durban throughout COP17, which ends Friday, December 9.
