Looking for a highbrow excuse to visit a part of town that can culminate in an afternoon visit to Gunther’s Ice Cream? Visit

Jayjay, the nice gallery two blocks south at 2906 Franklin Boulevard, and check out River Lines and Sketches, a show featuring the work of local product

John J. Smith. While the show’s press release claims “Smith opens up his paintings with Northern California atmospheric light,” we’re not so sure you can assign regional bias to a certain type of luminosity; California’s such a big, diverse state. Guess you’ll have to check it out yourself, with cookies and cream afterward. Jayjay is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday or by appointment; call 456-7650. Through October 20.
