No saucy Darth Vaders

It seems that with each passing year, the opportunity to make regrettable Halloween costume choices increases tenfold. Don't be surprised, for instance, if you go to a party this year where a sexy Bert and Ernie are in attendance, or a scantily clad Nemo from Finding Nemo. Or a saucy Darth Vader. (These are all actual mass-produced costumes available for purchase on the Web. Seriously. Google them.)

Luckily, for those that have zero desire to hit the streets as a provocative Pikachu, the UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance has unearthed 10 years' worth of costumes for the Enchanted Cellar Costume Rentals and made them available to the public for rental or purchase. And when these theater folk say “costume,” they mean it. There are elaborate versions of old standbys (Glinda the Good Witch, Superman, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.), and more obscure options, like Miss Havisham (you know, of Great Expectations fame) and steampunk attire.

Those in search of keeping it a little more low-key (and a little more low-budget) can pick up a zombie kit, which includes zombie-esque clothing, fake blood and makeup for $10. Patrons will also have the chance to participate in a silent auction for handcrafted, wacky hats at the Mad Hatters' Silent Auction. Thursday, October 24, through Friday, October 25, from 3 to 7 p.m.; Saturday, October 26, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Tuesday, October 29, through Friday, November 1, from 3 to 7 p.m. UC Davis, 1 Shields Avenue in 17 Wright Hall in Davis; (530) 752-0740; http://arts.ucdavis.edu/theatre-dance.
