Ninth Gate, The
A book detective finds himself on the trail of literature that will supposedly summon Satan from hell, and I’m not talking about the latest novel by Bret Easton Ellis. Johnny Depp plays the detective with a cool dryness that is on par with his best work, and Frank Langella is fun as the creepy rich guy who sends him on his mission. Roman Polanski directs this enjoyable mystery, with excellent camera work and set design that have you looking all over the screen when the story gets a little boring. It’s a good-looking movie that keeps you guessing, and even manages some solid laughs.
