Nevada lies dreaming

Slim Sirnes’ oeuvre in 3-D: Spuds McKenzie, perhaps?

Some may disagree, but nothing evokes the wide-open spaces and saucer-patrolled skies of Nevada like empty beer cans. Goldfield, in the emptiness south of Tonopah and west of Area 51, is where Svein “Slim” Sirnes lives, and there he fashions his folk art from castoff containers of Bud Light and other quaffables. Gallery Horse Cow proprietor Steve Vanoni, a longtime connoisseur of the autodidact as creative force, met Sirnes at Burning Man, and his North Sac gallery now has some of Sirnes’ pieces on display, along with works by a number of local artists—including Paul Basye, Joe Colley, Drayus, Bobby Horiuchi, Robert Gordon, Kepi and Stephanie Skalisky. Gallery Horse Cow is located at 1409 Del Paso Blvd., it’s open from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday or by appointment; call 922-9142 for one of those.
