Need energy? Try song and dance.
The real heart of Let’s Go!, billed as a “reality” musical, lies in the outstanding song-and-dance performances by the ensemble. Fairly traditional musical choices (an ultracool Motown medley, some rock and country, plenty of gospel and soul) are incredibly well-sung, and the program includes original compositions by local artists Charles Cooper and Carla Fleming (who also does some dynamite singing). The dancing is a little less traditional, but no less excellent—in fact, it’s breathtaking, with styles as diverse as ballet, hip-hop and salsa. The ensemble includes many dancers with significant professional experience, and it shows in the poise and power of the performances. A guest appearance by artists from AirAligned, a local aerial dance group, add a Cirque du Soleil feel, while Shanta’ Robinson practically channeled Tina Turner in a wild dance version of “Proud Mary.” All the spectacle, directed and produced by Pepper Von, more than makes up for a paper-thin melodramatic plot. There were some music and lighting cue glitches that will no doubt be quickly fixed, a minor distraction from the energetic and talented performers who propel the show. The energy is simply explosive.
