The UC Davis Arboretum is 100 acres of natural beauty, and now, as part of the university’s GATEways—Gardens, Arts, and The Environment—Project, recent landscape architecture grad John Gainey, adds a manmade beauty with his sculpture, “Crested Oak,” made from pieces of a 200-year-old valley oak. Art student Rebecca Portney’s creations can also be seen in the arboretum, called From Landfill to Landscape, which consists of discarded scrap steel welded into massive metal flowers.
