National Lampoon’s Van Wilder
A college party dude (Ryan Reynolds) can’t stand the thought of graduating, even after seven years as a campus celebrity; meanwhile a reporter on the school paper (Tara Reid) catches his eye. What makes this movie marginally better than college-moron comedies like Sorority Boys and Slackers is the screen rapport between Reynolds and Reid; she can’t act, but he can, and they look good together. Otherwise, it’s just more of the same: jokes about raunchy sex, premature ejaculation, cream puffs made with dog semen, and fraternities with names like Delta Iota Kappa (pity writers Brent Goldberg and David Wagner, so impoverished that, even unwittingly, they have to steal jokes from Sorority Boys). The one clever touch is the casting of the hero’s father with Animal House alumnus Tim Matheson.
