Mostly Martha
This savory German entry in the sensual food and romance genre is a relaxed, occasionally volatile observation on personal loss, conviction, resilience and connections. Perfectionist chef Martha runs the kitchen of an Italian restaurant in Hamburg with metronome-like precision. Her recipe for a complacent home life is suddenly altered when she must care for her 8-year-old niece following a family tragedy, and when her boss hires a free-spirited male chef (Sergio Castellitto) to help her in the kitchen. Martina Gedeck gives her portrayal of Martha an earthy inner glow. Castellitto elevates the film to an affirmation of life without succumbing to forced eccentricity. And Sibylle Canonica is the realistic anchor of the film who attempts to moderate Martha’s confrontations with an occasional unsatisfied diner by sending her to a therapist. Directed by Sandra Nettelbeck.
