When En Vogue was in its prime in the early '90s, I was about 6—just the right age to be exposed to “Free Your Mind,” “My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)” and, eventually, the group's collaboration with Salt-N-Peppa, “Whatta Man.” Formative stuff. It's been more than 20 years since, and I'm only now realizing “Don't Let Go (Love)” is basically the sonic equivalent of Anna Karenina, and any dramatic sensibilities I might posses, for better and for worse, can largely be traced back to that time.
