Mon, April 11, Band of Heathens
PowerHouse Pub, 9 p.m., $10
Austin quintet Band of Heathens formed four years ago when a trio of seasoned songwriters sharing a weekday bar residency decided to pool their talents. The result was greater than the sum of the parts. Distributing the weight of songwriting evenly bolsters the songs’ strength overall as the band’s first two albums dip into an array of midtempo blues, folk, country, Southern rock and songwriter pop. Its new album, Top Hat Crown & the Clapmaster’s Son, delves deeply in boogie, mining thick grooves with a funky Big Easy vibe. The band is even better live. 614 Sutter Street in Folsom, www.bandofheathens.com.
