Meet the maker
The origins of most holiday traditions are buried in obscurity. We may never know how the Easter Bunny got mixed up with Christ’s resurrection or who was the romantic inspiration for St. Valentine. Not so with Kwanzaa. Dr. Maulana Karenga created this annual weeklong tradition to celebrate the concepts of self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, unity, creativity, purpose and faith within the African-American community just 35 years ago. And Dr. Karenga is coming to Sacramento! He’ll discuss the quest for peace and justice in the world using the seven Kwanzaa concepts at an event in his honor, 4-8 p.m. Sunday. University Union Ballroom, CSUS. $20. Call 278-4323 for more info.
