Meaningful music

Remember your middle- and high-school years? They weren’t always great, right? But if you were lucky, maybe you discovered a talent that was nurtured by an adult or two along the way. Musician Shawn Thwaites has ignited a love of music in underserved youth through his nonprofit, Pan United Youth Movement. After launching two youth steel orchestras on the East Coast, he’s brought the movement west with the Youth Empowerment Steel (Y.E.S.) Orchestra. This all-steel drum ensemble makes its first appearance during Saturday’s benefit show, where Royal Tribe Dance Crew and Shawn Thwaites Rebel Quartet will perform. 2828 35th Street, www.panunited.org.
