Martha Scanlan
The West Was Burning
Martha Scanlan was the lead singer and main songwriter for Reeltime Travelers, a string band that walked the fine line between traditional and modern mountain music with finesse and style. Her songs continue to impress on this solo debut with their old-time acoustic feel, finely wrought lyrics and understated vocals. Her voice sounds wise beyond its years, a fragile instrument that makes the songs here seem as old as the hills and as bright as the lights on Nashville’s main drag. Highlights include “Walkin’,” a sly courtin’ song that sounds like something out of Bradley’s Barn in the ’60s, and the title track, a jaunty tune with rhythmic lyrics that add a nice syncopated feel to the music.
