Malcolm in the middle
Shasta Malcolm’s “Midnight Ride."It’s International Flair until October 8 at the C R Gallery, at 625 Vernon Street in Roseville. That’s the very unusual gallery where, during the day, cars zoom in between the art-decked walls for a breath check. New works by gallery owners Chuck Curtis and Robert Lindsey feature Curtis’ very athletic nudes painted in white on black, while Lindsey’s stylized portraits of Rat Packers like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, plus James Dean, evoke the sepia tones of photos. But Shasta Malcolm steals the show with her whimsical, cartoonish style— as in “Midnight Ride,” an acrylic painting of a ruby-lipped maiden, raven tresses streaming behind her as she pedals a purple unicycle with handlebars and a basket to carry her kitty down a yellow path. Big, yellow, five-pointed stars light an indigo sky that offers a few swirls not unlike those in Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” For more information, call (916) 718-9486.
