There are worse trends than swag rap. Rolling to the mall in SUV trucks, partying at the (strip) club with a bottle of champagne and a weed blunt: It’s just “sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll,” right? Check this clever double-entendre from Wiz Khalifa’s new indie album, Deal or No Deal: “You a bad bitch with a couple bad friends / I can let you rock the mic, she can do the ad-libs.” The album title refers to the Pittsburgh rapper’s recent departure from Warner Bros., which yielded plenty of blog love and one minor hit—“Say Yeah,” where he raps over Alice Deejay’s rave chestnut “Better Off Alone”—but, alas, no album. Isn’t it weird how overhyped rappers will be in all the magazines, yet never actually release any music? Anyway, Wiz Khalifa has gone the indie route, and makes the kids pop and jerk, which is important to remember for all you OGs who complain that he’s not conscious, can’t rap, et cetera. He’s for the young folks, not for you. This Friday, December 18, at Colonial Theatre, 3522 Stockton Boulevard; 7 p.m.; $15-$25.
