Lilo & Stitch
A lonely little Hawaiian girl adopts a “pet” who is really an escaped monster from another galaxy—with a posse of bizarre creatures hot on his trail. Sophisticated, expert animation, attractive pastel colors, and the relentless Disney hype machine can’t disguise the fact that this shameless animated ripoff of
E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is the worst-ever Disney animated feature (yes, even worse than
The Black Cauldron). Chris Sanders’ script is a model of misfire: Lilo is a whiny, unpleasant brat, all the aliens (including Stitch) are more repulsive than endearing, the comedy is mean-spirited and sadistic, the plot excruciatingly predictable and paced at a listless crawl that makes it feel hours longer than it really is (director credit—or blame—is given to Sanders and Dean Deblois).
