Let the trumpets—and politicians—bray

Beneath the wig, they’re all alike.

There’s no time like the present for a musical sendup of preening, stuffy politicians, and even if the politicians in question are from the end of the century before last, well, some things never change. The Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe, or The Peer and the Peri. The premise is a conflict between the faeries and the peers of Britain’s House of Lords, complete with a faerie-human hybrid, star-crossed lovers and poetic justice. Too bad we don’t have some faeries around to fix Congress and require intelligence as a prerequisite for election! Iolanthe is performed with a live orchestra and supertitles.

Iolanthe, or The Peer and the Peri; 8 p.m. Friday, 2 and 8 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday; $10-$20. Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento at the 24th Street Theatre, 2791 24th Street; (916) 258-5687; www.lightoperasac.org. Through April 10.
