Late Marriage

A Tel Aviv philosophy student in his early 30s (a rueful Lior Ashkenazi) troubles his tradition-driven parents by not marrying one of many younger girls and women that they arrange for him to meet. His indifference to the constant persistence, pressure and prodding from his family is fueled by a secret love affair with a slightly older, rather liberated, divorced mother of one. His folks finally discover and attempt to dismantle his relationship as we are left wondering who will prevail. Dover Kosashvili’s candid, bittersweet, depressing story of the heart, the loins and clashing family values and obligation includes a lengthy, bold, naturalistic sex scene that is as foreign to those of us weaned on Hollywood glamour and sensationalism as the film’s Georgian and Hebrew dialogue.
