Kudos from New York

Local actress Janis Stevens is basking in good press. Last Thursday in New York, Stevens was nominated for a Drama Desk Award in the “outstanding solo performance” category for her show Vivien, about actress Vivien Leigh. (Winners will be announced on May 21.)

Stevens originated the show in 1997 at Sierra Repertory Theatre in Sonora and developed it over two runs at Sacramento’s California Stage. She took it to San Francisco’s Magic Theatre in 2001.

Stevens will appear in Sacramento this month in the Capital Stage production of Humble Boy, which runs May 12 through June 25 on the Delta King Riverboat.

Rick Foster, the playwright who scripted Vivien for Stevens, will perform this summer at California Stage, in a reprise of his recent solo piece about poet William Butler Yeats, Fastened to a Dying Animal.
