Just Wright
A physical therapist (Queen Latifah) works with an injured NBA star (Common) and gradually falls in love with him, but he only has eyes for her fickle cousin (Paula Patton). As romantic dramedies go, this one has a tinge of originality, thanks in part to Michael Elliot’s well-proportioned script (although he might have found a better title) and Sanaa Hamri’s competent direction. The most valuable player award, though, goes to Latifah; Common is still a bit stiff as an actor, but Latifah can make a partner look good—she makes us see things in this basketball player that aren’t necessarily there in the actor’s performance. The movie’s most interesting relationship isn’t between Latifah’s Leslie Wright and Common’s Scott McKnight, it’s the one between Latifah and Patton as the selfish cousin Morgan.
