Just puggin’ along

Pug race. Saturday. William Land Park.

Seriously, what more can be said to get people to the 16th annual Doggy Dash and Bark at the Park? Exactly. Watching a dog with a cute, little smooshed face and short legs race other dogs with cute, little smooshed faces and short legs trumps any other Saturday event. Throw in a dog and owner look-alike contest and even cat lovers will flock.

Glancing at a Bedlington terrier with an eerily identical owner in tow on a normal day might incite a growl from the owner. But at a sanctioned dog look-alike contest, you’re allowed to look and even ogle.

People just can’t help themselves when it comes to dog events. They’re like a circus sideshow with a triple dose of the cuteness factor. A man dressed up like a tulip can be a bit disturbing; put that same costume on a male dog and it’s absolutely adorable.

So, yes, there will be trick competitions, a 5-kilometer run/walk, doggy yoga and contests galore. But there also will be chances to raise funds for the Sacramento SPCA. Spread the wealth and they’ll be able to save more pups to be your best friend, protect you from burglars and help you win a look-alike contest.

Hint to anyone else trying to raise funds: doggy dance-off. Just a suggestion.
