The charcoal renderings of Texas-born Maggie Evans are ghostly, monochromatic interior scenes, suggesting a hazy memory or recalled moment from a dream. The repetition of vacant chairs and tables is eerie in a strangely comforting way. The artwork by this 30-year-old is just one of many selected for Axis Gallery’s fifth annual juried show. Juror Joe Amrhein, artist and owner/director of the Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., also selected work by Louise Captein, Brittany Ransom and the fantastic surreal photography by San Francisco-based Katherine Du Tiel.
