Joy Ride

While Jeepers Creepers still qualifies as the year’s best chase film, director John Dahl (Red Rock West) serves up serviceable entertainment with this apparent tribute to Steven Spielberg’s Duel. Two brothers (Paul Walker and Steve Zahn) on a cross-country trip make a crank call on their CB radio, and the results are deadly, as a truck driver (who we never really see) chases them, seeking revenge for being the butt of their joke. LeeLee Sobieski eventually joins the mayhem, and Dahl makes the chase as fun as these things can get. Filmed quite some time ago using nearby Nevada locales, the movie creates a nice sense of dread, though the payoff is a slight letdown.
