There is something primitive in the embracing figures of Richard Downs’ Couples series. Sometimes it’s the way they’ve been rendered, and sometimes it’s the patterns Downs creates, which are, at times, reminiscent of ethnic textile motifs. Similarly, the illustrations can be simultaneously intricate, much like how a relationship between two individuals often is. The Nevada City-based artist will be exhibiting 20 new monotypes and paintings from this series of intimacy and reticence at the Sacramento Temporary Contemporary through April 2.
Amanda Cook, Trent Liddicoat and Gabriel Nokes are some of the artists showing at both Phono Select and Bows and Arrows during February’s Second Saturday.
