Sacramentans apparently like to play dress up. In addition to our numerous anime conventions featuring cosplay, there are also annual events such as the Trash Film Orgy’s Zombie Walk, the Mermaid Parade, the Santa Parade and a copious amount of costumed Halloween events every October.
So, if you’ve got a hankering to dust off that ol’ pirate costume this weekend, a group called Pirates of Sacramento is hosting its Pirates Rendezvous event at the Sacramento Marriott Rancho Cordova.
Happening Friday and Saturday, this family-friendly event celebrates pirate culture through food, games, cannon demonstrations, a pirate school with pirate history lectures and a costumed pirate ball. A costume contest Saturday night will award prizes for: dandiest plumage, best sword, most accouterments, most feathers and most bangles on a bra or sash. A “hottest heels” contest will award a prize for the best skyscrapers, ankle busters or eff-me pumps. And of course, there will be a no-host bar with plenty of rum.
Special guests include a host nicknamed Bildgemunkey, a juggling pirate named Jack Spareribs and game master Captian Kalybre. Music will come from pirate-rock band the Pirate Charles. The Los Angeles-based band blends old-world instrumentation with modern punk and folk. Vendors will set up shop both nights for you to purchase knickknacks and other found treasure. Merfolk, enchanted, cursed and supernatural beings arrr also welcome.
Friday, January 27, from 5 p.m. to midnight; and Saturday, January 28, from 10 a.m. to midnight. Ticket options: all-access pass for $60; dinner only for $45; costume ball only for $25; and Family Fun Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., for $5.
