Luck and destiny are siphoned from person to person by touch and used as a macabre gambling stake in this moody, metaphysical thriller from Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. Max von Sydow stars as a mysterious sort of cardinal of chance who runs a neo-lit casino situated in a barren lava field. He strips his mentor, Federico, of his powers to rob good fortune from others, when the weary protégé declares his independence and wants to strike out on his own. Federico makes his way back to the casino years later for revenge with the sole survivor of an airplane wreck in tow who is in turn being shadowed by a female detective who once walked away from a car crash that killed her family. Fresnadillo has fashioned a sleek journey involving catastrophe, guilt, obsession, undeserved privilege and the nature of fate.
