Inn dispute
Stalled contract negotiations between union employees and management of the Holiday Inn Capitol Plaza have caused workers to take their demands to the street. Unite Here Local 49, the union for restaurant and hotel workers in Sacramento, is demanding wage increases, health-care benefits and other workplace improvements similar to contracts won at other local hotel chains.
The union is planning public protests November 7 if this week’s negotiations fall short of a deal. Union workers at the three other leading hotels in Sacramento—the Sheraton Grand, the Hilton and the Radisson—all won new, more generous contracts within the last year. Holiday Inn is the next target for Unite Here’s nationwide “Hotel Workers Rising” campaign.
“We expect the Holiday Inn to meet the standards set at those three hotels,” said union organizer Josh Eidelson. “They are telling their employees to settle for less.”
