I ♥ Huckabees

An environmental activist (Jason Schwartzman) hires a pair of “existential detectives” (Dustin Hoffman and Lily Tomlin) to investigate some odd coincidences in his life, but they go further than he wants, delving into his love-hate relationship with a marketing executive (Jude Law) for a gigantic retail chain store. The script by director David O. Russell and Jeff Baena is a wacky, double-talking can of worms that always seems on the brink of making a point, but, like some crackpot babbling about UFOs, never does. The ride is ultimately frustrating, but it’s fun for long stretches, thanks to Russell’s sprightly pacing and a great cast (including Naomi Watts, Isabelle Huppert, Mark Wahlberg, Jean Smart, Bob Gunton, Talia Shire and Tippi Hedren) playing a hodgepodge of offbeat characters.
