Hypnotic folk
John Heart Jackie is Portland, Ore., folk duo Jennie Wayne and Peter Murray. Wayne’s voice is enchanting, like a lullaby so lovely you hope it doesn’t hypnotize you into a deep slumber. Murray’s voice is like the hands of a mountain man: rough, a bit scratchy, yet strong and stable. Together their voices are perfectly hypnotic.
The duo’s latest album, We Are Gold Mounds—just released on iTunes at the beginning of August—was recorded during the springtime in the vineyard where Wayne grew up, which is fitting. It would make a perfect soundtrack for a breezy, sunny spring picnic. You can even hear the sound of birds on “For Olivia (Be Fine).”
Their sound is refreshing and relaxing, yet adventurous, invoking a kind of wanderlust buried beneath innocent melodies. “The Canyons” is reminiscent of early 20th-century simplistic serenades with 21st-century depth and complexity. “Deep as Whales” features a hauntingly beautiful duo of musical saws, an eerie companion for a mellow afternoon. It may be a contender for the best track, but in reality, all the songs are magnificent. Put it on repeat and enjoy.
