How the Grinch Stole Christmas

While the classic cartoon far outshines this live action retelling of the Grinch’s story, there are some good times to be had here. Jim Carrey is marvelous as the title character, covered in green fur and impressive prosthetic makeup, turning in an often manic and sometimes very touching performance. Director Ron Howard scores with the Grinch material, but his vision of Whoville is something less than enchanting. The movie is just OK, missing the chance to be a holiday classic due to some bad make-up for the Whos and sloppy set designs.
