Holland swings!
Over 30 years down the road, and the repercussions from Miles Davis’ epochal 1969 jazz fusion album Bitches Brew are still being felt. That double LP helped launch a number of jazz careers; one of those was that of British-born bassist Dave Holland—who subsequently made quite a name, and catalog, recording for Manfried Eicher’s influential, Oslo-based chamber-jazz label ECM. Holland’s most recent work, Not for Nothin’, is accessible without slouching toward smooth jazz, and it swings hard, too. Holland’s quintet includes saxophonist Chris Potter, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibist Steve Nelson and drummer Billy Kilson. That’s the group that’ll be on hand at an 8 p.m. show Saturday, October 6, at the Varsity Theatre, 616 Second St., Davis. Tickets $13.50-$27.
