Hideous Kinky
A single mother (Kate Winslet) and her two young daughters (Carrie Mullan and Bella Riza) swap a bleak existence in London for the wonders of 1972 Morocco in this exotic drama. The hippie-ish mother seeks enlightenment and wants her daughters to embrace a life of adventure. Her girls struggle with abandonment issues stemming from a missing support check from their father, and the eldest yearns for a normal life in which she can attend school. A street performer (Said Taghmaoui) becomes lover, father figure and mentor to the clan as director Gillies MacKinnon spins Esther Freud’s autobiographical novel into an intriguing, somewhat muddled tale of escapism and revelation.
