Chicken: the “other” biofuel.

Chicken: the “other” biofuel.

Move over, ethanol: NASA is currently testing chicken-fat-based biofuel in jet engines. It’s part of the Alternative Aviation Fuel Experiment II, underway at Dryden Flight Research Center in Southern California. To reach the Defense Department’s goal of utilizing 25 percent renewable resources by 2025, the Air Force also wants part of its fleet to use a 50 percent blend of the biofuel. The Air Force currently provides NASA with the fuel, purchased last year from Tyson Foods. It’s refined from chicken parts not fit for human consumption and is traditionally used by soap, crayon, cosmetics and animal-food manufacturers.
